French parliametarians are demanding an investigation into the Church of Scientology, following the kidnapping of Frenchwoman Martine Boubil by members of the cult, according to the French newspaper Le Figaro.
Congressman (UMP) Georges Fenech is spearheading the call for a parliamentary committee of inquiry into Scientology.
"Investigation into this cult necessary in light of unrest caused in France by Scientology," He told Le Figaro. "It seems to me appropriate to shed light on this organization functioning in a very opaque manner."
"If Scientology operates in accordance with our laws, it will be left alone," he said. "Their way of doing things is a problem and we need to draw all the consequences. "
The 48-year-old Boublil, who was kidnapped by members of the cult and held for several weeks in Sardinia before being rescued by Italian police, will be repatriated to France shortly, French diplomats said.
But Boubil must lodge a complaint before the French authorities could start an investigation, but after Scientology leaders started sending her death threats, she has claimed that she has not made up her mind about seeking justice against the people who put her through the ordeal.
Danièle Gounord, spokesman for Scientology in Paris, denied Boubil's accusations.
